Where Honor is Due

Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise.” Ephesians 6:2

May and June contain two Sundays – Mother’s Day and Father’s Day – designated to provide the opportunity for us to honor our parents and for parents to be honored by their children. With graduations, camps and vacations happening in these months, it can be easy to slight moms and dads – yet, we are commanded in the Old and New Testaments to honor our parents. These 2 days give us those occasions for honoring, remembering and caring.

For those whose parent(s) are no longer here on earth, these 2 days give the possibility for remembering and reminiscing. Not all memories are good for everyone, but honoring and being thankful for those who either gave life to us or who raised us is always good. Thinking about days gone by can be healing and helpful.

For those whose parent(s) are still alive on this earth, these 2 days provide a momentous time to talk, share and enjoy. Tangible gifts are always nice, but most parents would rather have time with their children than a store-bought gift. A heart-felt hand-written appreciation note or a note of thanks from children to parents would be wonderful. A personal visit or at least a phone call would be great. With the technology of today, a facetime call will work. Mothers and Fathers – We rise up and honor you! Thank you! We appreciate you!
